Salzburg, Austria

The picturesque city of Salzburg is surrounded by the Alps and sitting along Germany’s border. It is accessible from Linz, which is on the banks of the Danube River. Besides being the birthplace of Mozart, it is also well known for being the backdrop in The Sound of Music! DO, RE, MI, FA, SOL, LA, TI… sorry.

Today it is still much a fairytale city with the Old Town highlighting exquisite Baroque architecture on its many medieval palaces, churches, and castles. Salzburg is well known for Festung Hohensalzburg which is Central Europe’s largest intact fortress from the 11th century and Mirabell Palace, from the 17th century.

Once you have seen the fortress, there is a very scenic and effortless walk that will reward you with some beautiful views of the city. As you head back down the hill into town, look for a trail called Monchsberg. If you follow the trail ridge until you get to the art museum, you will get great photographs right in front of it.

In town be sure to stroll down the Getreidegasse. Your head will swivel taking in all the decorative signs above you.

As with most cities, there are tours that can give you a much more immersive look. If you are up for it and if you are a Sound of Music fan, skip the bus and walking and opt for the bike tour. Expect one of the tour guides to have an excellent singing voice.

If you’re lucky enough to be in town on a Thursday, hit the market at Mirabellplatz. It’s a local farmer’s market with lots of delicious local foods. Being Austria, you must try Salzburg schnitzel. Every area has a different spin on their version, and you won’t be disappointed. Specifically, wiener-schnitzel, the epitome of Austrian cuisine. Imagine a big, battered, flattened, then breaded and fried slab of tender veal. Yum!
