As I set out to write this article about Switzerland, Jo’El and I are “T” minus 2 days away from our trip to Europe. You may ask, why write about Switzerland? Well, the answer is rather simple. We will be leaving Atlanta on Wednesday the 18th, and we will be landing in Zurich on the 19th, early in the day. Switzerland is not the only destination on our trip, it is just the beginning.Â
We will be spending a total of 5 days backpacking in the country before heading to Basel in order to board an AmaWaterways vessel for a 7-night river cruise journey from Basel, Switzerland to Nuremberg, Germany. Follow our Facebook page and follow along as we journey through Switzerland, France and Germany. Now on to the article…
Nestled in the heart of Europe, Switzerland is a country that effortlessly blends natural beauty, rich history, and modernity. With its stunning landscapes, pristine lakes, and charming villages, it’s no wonder that Switzerland is a dream destination for travelers from around the world. While we are there, we will be posting from Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken (Alps) then Bern (Capital and Cheese tour). We will be visiting Mount Rigi, Mount Pilatus and Lake Lucerne in the heart of the Swiss Alps. We will be wrapping up our visit in Basel.
Start your Swiss adventure in its vibrant cities. Zurich, the largest city, is a bustling metropolis known for its financial prowess and cultural attractions. Wander through the historic Old Town, visit world-class museums like the Kunsthaus Zurich, and indulge in the city’s culinary delights at local cafes and restaurants.
Geneva, on the other hand, is renowned for its international diplomacy and beautiful lakeside setting. Don’t miss the iconic Jet d’Eau fountain and explore the United Nations headquarters. For those interested in history and architecture, Basel boasts a well-preserved medieval old town and the impressive Basel Minster.
No trip to Switzerland is complete without a journey into the Alps. The Swiss Alps are a haven for outdoor enthusiasts year-round. In the winter, world-class ski resorts like Zermatt and Verbier beckon skiers and snowboarders with their pristine slopes and breathtaking mountain views.
During the summer, the Alps transform into a playground for hikers and nature lovers. The Jungfrau region, with its picturesque villages like Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, offers a gateway to some of the most awe-inspiring hikes in the world. Trek through lush meadows, past cascading waterfalls, and beneath towering peaks for an experience you’ll never forget.
Swiss cuisine is as diverse as its landscapes. While cheese fondue and chocolate may be the most famous Swiss exports, the country offers a wide range of culinary delights. Try raclette, a cheese dish served with potatoes and pickles, or rosti, a crispy potato pancake. Swiss chocolates are a must-try, and you can even visit chocolate factories for a sweet tour.
Switzerland is a multilingual and multicultural country. It has four official languages: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. Each region has its own distinct culture and traditions. In Zurich, you’ll experience the German-speaking Swiss culture, while in Geneva, French influences prevail.
Swiss punctuality and efficiency are renowned worldwide, making it a reliable destination for business travelers as well. But it’s not all work and no play; the Swiss value their leisure time and know how to enjoy life.
Switzerland’s transportation system is the envy of the world. Trains run like clockwork, and the extensive network of cable cars and cogwheel trains makes it easy to access even the most remote mountain villages. Consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited travel on the Swiss Travel System network, including trains, buses, and boats.
Switzerland’s allure lies in its ability to offer something for every traveler. Whether you’re seeking the tranquility of a lakeside retreat, the thrill of skiing down pristine slopes, or the charm of historic cities, Switzerland delivers. Its natural beauty, rich culture, and efficient infrastructure make it a destination that leaves an indelible mark on every visitor.
We will be documenting every step of our trip as we trek through this beautiful country. We will be posting pictures, doing Facebook lives and we will TRY to write a blog as we travel. Do not forget to take part in our game with Cameron for a chance to win a gift basket that will contain Swiss chocolates and wine as well as a few other goodies.
