Cape Town
Cape Town is another destination on people’s minds. There is a draw to Africa that makes you want to go, but uncertainty from its history gives many people pause.
South Africa is flourishing. Tourism is up as the world discovers foods, wines, culture, and nature that cannot be duplicated. Let’s look at the first stop in South Africa and the gateway to many trips into the interior.
Cape Town boasts some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. The dark blue hues of the water with the mountains as a backdrop are stunning. Surfers come from all over the world to beat nature. Boulders Beach, about 18 miles away, is the home to a large colony of African penguins and a popular tourist destination.
Between June and December, you can awe at the whales that splash and frolic when they come into the bay to mate. You can see them from most of the coast, but Kalk Bay and St James beaches offer the best spots to see them play. (Do not forget about the great white sharks also) So make sure you take a walk on the beach at sunset for spectacular colors as the sun sets.
If getting in the water is for you, then along South Africa’s Garden Route are tropical coral reefs and excellent diving and snorkeling spots to discover. You can take a boat charter out to Seal Island, where you will get your fill of seals more penguins, and lots of sea birds.
Table mountain is the large prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa. A cable car will take you to the top, for gorgeous views of the coastline and the city below. This is a natural area on the fringe of a big city, so exercise caution and stay close to the rest of the crowd, but do not miss this opportunity!
Food
One of the best reasons to visit South Africa is the dining! When you visit Cape Town, spend time in the Cape Winelands, the ‘gourmet capital’. You will be able to explore beautiful estates, sample award-winning wines in cool cellars and on vine-covered patios. Here, you will also be able to dine on the world’s finest cuisine in its award-winning restaurants.
The British left their mark here in the form of Fish and Chips. You will find street vendors to high-end restaurants all supporting the culture that the meal has become. Stay with tradition, and head to a place that specializes in fish and chips. The closer to the ocean the better, and order a portion of deep-fried hake or snoek with chips. Kalky’s in Kalk Bay and Snoekies in Hout Bay are two original shops to visit.
Many day trips leave from Cape Town and wonderful places to stay in and outside of the city. You will love your time here.
